The Vikings, Roald Amundson, Fridtjof Nansen, Thor Heyerdal ...Norwegians whose names evoke a spirit of exploration and adventure. Add a new name, Helga Estby. Helga went through many of the hardships experienced by Scandinavian immigrants — adventurers in their own right — but Helga went a few steps more, 3500 miles more . . . on foot. Born in Oslo, Helga came to America with her mother and step-father at the age of eleven settling in New York. At a young age Helga gave birth to Clara, married and moved to Minnesota. She eventually bore nine children, had a difficult life on the prairie, and moved with her family to the state of Washington in time for the 1893 depression. Lured by an offer from a mysterious sponsor, Helga was promised $10,000 — money which could prevent foreclosure and save the family homestead — if she could walk to New York City. Helga and her daughter Clara left Spokane in April 1896. During the journey they faced extreme temperatures, hunger, exposure and even shot a man in self-defense, but they also met with mayors, governors and other important people, including President-elect McKinley. They arrived in New York City on Christmas Eve, 1896. What followed was an American tragedy. You'll have to read the book to get the rest of the story. Bold Spirit was written by Linda Lawrence Hunt, Associate Professor of English at Whitworth College in Spokane, who researched Helga's life and journey for her Ph.D. dissertation.

    Adapted from Roald Dahl's story
    DVD
Roald Dahl, like many of Rural Route Bookstore's customers, was 100% Norwegian. However, his parents emigrated to Wales rather than America. Dahl — a prolific writer of adult and children's stories, screenplays, novels, and short stories — became internationally known for his writing and philanthropy, but mainly for nineteen children's books which were translated into many languages and often made into movies. Throughout the years, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has been issued by several film companies under different titles including "Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory". This special widescreen edition version, released in 2005, stars Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka, the reclusive candy connoisseur of a candy factory that is supposedly closed but continues to produce and ship candy all over the world, and is directed by Tim Burton. Fill a bowl of popcorn or, in this case, a bowl of Wonka Whipple-Scrumptious Fudgemallow Delight candies, and let your imagination run wild as you sail along the Chocolate River, enter this magical factory, and frolic with the Oompa-Loompas. 115 minutes. Rating "PG Suggested".

Beginning in 1939, Lindgren —Sweden's beloved children's author — began writing books for young people. Her final two books were published posthumously in 2002, the year she died at age 94, and in 2007. Well, maybe these aren't her final books; In January 2008, the national Library of Sweden inaugurated the Astrid Lindgren Archive and opened parts of it to the public, and other manuscripts may be developed. In her almost 70 years of writing, she had composed over 100 books that have been translated into 84 languages and sold in over 100 countries. Many were made into movies, including those about her most famous character, "Pippi Longstocking".  In 1999, her homeland voted her "the most popular Swede of the century", a theme park in her hometown of Vimmerby bears her name, "Astrid Lindgren's Varld", and in the late 70s a Soviet astronomer even named a new minor planet after her. According to Lindgren, the "noisy village," a recurring location in some stories, was reminiscent of the small town where she grew up, and the boyish unkempt behavior of characters like Pippi was based on Lindgren's recollections of herself as a young girl.  For ages 3 - 8.

"And suddenly in two tongues one song filled the night sky." John McCutcheon, nominated for six Grammy Awards, has been called "America's balladeer" and has been described as a cross between either Pete Seeger and Mr. Rogers, or a mixture of Will Rogers and Bruce Springsteen. In addition to kudos for his music, McCutcheon has won multiple Parent's Choice and American Library Association awards for his writing, and numerous awards from educational groups for this particular book — geared to all ages. Along with historically appropriate artistic illustrations (illustrated in beautiful, yet fittingly faded-appearing art by Henri Sørensen, Danish illustrator of many books), recipients of this book will receive the best of two McCutcheon's talents: his touching story about a Christmas Eve truce instigated by the soldiers who were in mud-soaked trenches 100 feet apart — a place called No Man's Land on the battlefields of Belgium, and an accompanying CD reading of this thought-provoking story that also features two of McCutcheon's songs. The book also has the sheet music for his song, "Christmas in the Trenches." The narrator ends the story with "...all too soon the dawn reminded us it was time to get back to our own sides. Back to the trenches. Back to the waiting."

Built in 1877, Bob Artley’s family farm in Hampton, Iowa, was without indoor plumbing and was heated by wood or a coal-burning stove. Yet, the air was filled with love and security, especially during the holiday season. It created a magical childhood that Artley wished every child could experience. Sharing his memories through nationally syndicated articles, other writings, sketches, and 10 books was Artley's way of helping that wish come true. From the arrival of mail-order catalogues to perilous tobogganing sessions, Artley depicts a rural Christmas rich with simple activities that often go unnoticed. In loving detail, he describes the homemade gifts he and his siblings created for their parents, reminisces about sharing family popcorn evenings on cold winter nights, details delightful meals that marked the Yuletide season, and remembers selecting and cutting Christmas trees. This book, packed with watercolor painting and Artley's sketches, emphasizes the joys of family and friends over the excess of material wants and needs. A great holiday gift for those with an appreciation of the past, or those wanting to learn about "the good old days."
