For non-Midwesterners, Al Johnson’s is a famous Swedish Restaurant and Butik in Door County, and there really are goats grazing on the roof. Goats on a roof is a theme in several old folk tales, but this one is about a goat named DeeCee who climbs around Johnson’s restaurant. And like most goats, this one does not stay still or stay where he should. Enjoy the adventures of DeeCee, and put Al Johnson’s on your list for a family vacation. Illustrated by Jan Jablonski also of Door County.

Readers interested in Norway's history and monarchy will find this book fascinating. It chronicles the early life of Norway's King Harald as told through journals kept by Inga Berg who was Prince Harald's nurse at Skaugum, the royal family’s estate in Asker near Oslo, the first 18 months of Prince Harald's life. Normally one could find journals of an unknown person mundane especially when they cover such a short time period, but Berg's "nephew in America," Odell Bjerkness, has created an engaging book that pulls together the history of the monarchy, the many changes occurring in Scandinavia over the past 100 years, the political climate in Norway from 1900 through WW II, and how these events impacted the Berg/Bjerkness families in both America and in Norway. It is perhaps the layout of the book that brings this history to life. Bjerkness includes pages from Berg's journals in their handwritten form along with English translations and he supplements these texts with over 100 photos, newspaper articles, maps and charts listing royal lineage as well as the daily amounts of milk consumed by Lillebror, the name fondly bestowed upon the prince by his two older sisters. Appendices, often ignored by readers, are truly an interesting part of this new work of nonfiction. An insight that becomes clear to the reader is how the monarchy has established a close relationship to the people of Norway, and how Norwegians have reciprocated this fondness. The author himself, though Norwegian-American, plays a major role in American relations with Norway today. Odell M. Bjerkness, now of Edina, MN and Professor Emeritus of Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, was the executive director of Concordia's Language Villages and May Seminars Abroad programs for many years. (He was also my "boss" the ten years I directed Skogfjorden, the Norwegian Language Village). Bjerkness remains active in Scandinavian-American circles, and in 1982 he received the St. Olav Medal for his work promoting Norwegian-American relations. The medal was bestowed upon him by King Olav V, Lillebror's father and Nanny Aunt Inga's ultimate employer.

Stultz Paperback If you heard stories about your grandfather taking the oxcart to St. Cloud for supplies and being gone for two weeks, this book, recently re-issued by the Minnesota Historical Society Press, is for you. It traces the paths running through Minnesota, North Dakota and Canada that were used as international trade routes for furs and merchandise between St. Paul in the south and the settlement that was to become Winnipeg in the north. Supplemented with maps, sketches, a full index and reference notes, the book is divided into chapters featuring six main trails: Manitoba, North Dakota, Minnesota Valley, Woods, Middle and Metropolitan. "At the risk of sounding like a full-blown geek, this is about to become my favorite book. Maps for the Middle Trail even show my little hometown, right there, two weeks from St. Cloud...a trip that takes about an hour and a half today!" Suzann Nelson

    Paperback
In this book Tove Jansson captures the essence of the summer—its sunlight and storms— presenting it in 22 vignettes wrapped around six-year-old Sophia and her grandmother. The two females, on opposite ends of life, spend the summer on a tiny unspoiled island in the Gulf of Finland. Together they amble over the coastlines and through the forests in easy companionship. They build boats from bark, create a miniature Venice, and write a fanciful study of local bugs. They discuss things that matter to young and old alike: life, death, and the natures of God and of love. In this sensitive tale of island life, Jansson — who lived much of her life on an island like the one described in this book — creates her own complete world, full of the varied joys and sorrows. Swedish actress Liv Ullmann wrote, "The Summer Book is beautiful and warm, with the kind of wisdom we can adapt to our everyday lives."
