This book is a tool for all genealogists, beginning and experienced, who are researching family, local, or state history. The Minnesota Historical Society (MHS) has one of the richest collections in the nation, but such vast resources can be overwhelming. Compiled by the experienced MHS staff, this book is a great guide to the Society’s myriad holdings. New and revised, this book features a lengthy, annotated list of resources related to biography, census, naturalization; cemeteries, schools, religious or business affiliations; legal, military, and veterans’ records; death records/index (1908-96); photos, personal papers, oral histories, ethnic resources; newspapers, directories, passenger ship lists; and maps, atlases, etc. Also, general researchers will find it a source of information about new social histories: studies of gender, families, ethnic groups, urban and rural pasts, labor, material culture, and everyday life. In other words, this would be an excellent gift for both the researcher or genealogist in your family.

This beautiful Danish recipe book was released less than two months ago by first time author, Dagmarette Yen. This book will make a lovely holiday gift and because of its recent release, chances are unlikely that your friends or family will have this. According to her bio, Dagmarette "spent her childhood atop the kitchen counter" where she learned the same cooking skills that her mother, who came to America from Denmark at age 18, learned from her grandmother. In compiling this "art cookbook," Dagmarette has taken the best of the customs, rituals and recipes from her mother's Danish relatives and placed them in a lovely, colorful work of art that reflects the artistic skills she learned from her Chinese father. Unlike common cookbooks that have recipes for many foods divided into categories such as appetizers, beverages, etc., this 50-page book's focus is on Christmas foods only, and the chapters are separated into Night Before, Juleaften (or Christmas Eve), and Julebord, the Christmas table or Christmas spread. It is Dagmarette's intention to preserve and share the holiday traditions that her family treasures when they gather "for the grandest feast of the year." She has achieved this goal already by making this new marvelous work available.

Note: This is a Norwegian-to-English dictionary only. For several decades the name, Einar Haugen, struck fear in many, many students of Norwegian. It meant frequent visits to the language lab to listen to reel-to-reel tapes and late night dorm hours, but it also meant quality. Students at Norwegian Lutheran colleges in America spent as much time memorizing dialogues from Spoken Norwegian (a prime language text by Haugen) as they did attending chapel and choir rehearsals! Now the grand-daddy of Scandinavian professors is perhaps best known for his excellent dictionary. This 60,000-word Norwegian-English dictionary lists the "bokmål" and "nynorsk" words in alphabetical order rather than treating them as two separate alphabets, and contains detailed information on grammar and pronunciation, cross-references and examples of usage. Like Haugen, this highly regarded book has become the grand-daddy of all Norwegian-English dictionaries.
