Vikings

Story of the Vikings    by A. G. Smith

This 48-page coloring book contains thoroughly researched, factual narrative chronicling the exciting life of the Norsement -- their Viking life in Norway and Iceland, raids into England and France, and their presence in America and Russia.  Along with thirty-eight very detailed illustrations, there are also maps and information and sketches of ship construction, weapons, art, literature, battles, and more.

Although copyrighted, these illustrations -- or parts of them -- will inspire artists who are designing projects such as carving, painting, drawing, or even quilting.  For ages 9 and through adult; for grades 4 and up.

The Viking WorldLife and Times in The Viking World  by Sheila Clewley, Julie Ferris, Andrew Charman

Although it is only 32 pages, this lavishly illustrated history series is nonfiction at its best. With clear, readable text, information-packed illustrations, and a child-friendly design, this book provides an exciting insight into how people lived thousands of years ago. It depicts, in colored illustrations, the daily life of the Vikings —  diet, living conditions, and agriculture —  and it creates a clear picture of this fascinating culture, and offers an interesting insight into northern Europe's intriguing history.

This is a book for older children, but it is also a useful reference for folks of all ages who want a factual snapshot of Scandinavian civilization in eleventh century.  Enter the Viking world and discover the mysteries
of the Norse religion, learn about the Icelandic Althing, and find out about exciting explorations.

A special feature in this book is a great fold-out map of Viking explorations and settlements from Greenland in the north, Russia in the east, North America in the west, and France in the south.  Recommended reading level is for Grades 1 through 5, but it should probably be closer to Grades 3 through 6.

"I have lots of books about the Vikings, but I am buying one of these for myself, and I am years beyond the recommended age level of Grades 1 through 5 — like bordering on that year when I get sent some government papers about Medicare plans!"  SN

Sea Wolves from the North       by Michael Mullen

Written in the 1980s by Irish writer and children's author Mullen, and illustrated in black and white sketches by Jeanette Dunne, this young adult story is billed as "a sea drama from Viking Times."

Sigmund the Red, a young Viking adventurer from southern Norway, leads his sea wolves southwards to Ireland and Scotland. With a Viking invasion imminent, Diarmuid — a boy monk living on Iona — is given the responsibility to protect the golden book of the monastery. He must tackle the waters of a dangerous whirlpool in order to accomplish his mission, and this is only part of the excitement in this adventure novel about the Vikings in the Dark Ages. Suggested reading age is 12 and up.
